Is hydro excavation more expensive than digging by hand or machine?

It generally costs more per metre than a digger in open ground, but it's often cheaper overall once you account for the cost and downtime of a service strike, and it's usually faster and less disruptive than digging by hand.

Does it damage the pipes or cables once exposed?

No. The water pressure is set to break up soil, not damage solid pipe, cable or conduit, so the exposed service is left intact and ready to work on.

Can you use it in winter or wet ground?

Yes, though very wet or saturated ground slows the vacuum recovery. We adjust water pressure and scheduling around ground conditions on the day.

Christchurch's ground is a mess of overlapping services after decades of development and the post-earthquake rebuild, water, wastewater, stormwater, gas, power and fibre often sit within centimetres of each other, sometimes with old records that don't match what's actually there. Hitting one with a digger bucket is expensive, dangerous and, for gas or power, potentially life-threatening.

Hydro excavation gets around that by using pressurised water to break up the soil and a vacuum to lift it out, exposing pipes and cables without a blade ever touching them. We use it on jobs where the risk of hitting a service is real.

How it works

A high-pressure water jet loosens the soil into a slurry, and an industrial vacuum immediately sucks it into a debris tank. The service being exposed is left clean and undamaged, and the spoil is contained rather than spread across the site.

Locating a gas main or lateral before mechanical digging nearby
Exposing a water main for a tie-in or repair without risking a strike
Digging in a road berm or footpath crowded with multiple services
Potholing to verify service depth and location before design work
Working close to tree roots where you don't want to damage them either

Where it beats a digger

A digger is faster in open ground with no services, but the moment there's uncertainty about what's below, the cost of a strike outweighs the time saved. Hydro excavation costs more per metre but removes that risk almost entirely, and it leaves a smaller, tidier hole to reinstate afterwards.

Ground conditions around Christchurch

Silty and sandy ground in eastern suburbs like Aranui and Bexley vacuums out easily. Heavier clay further out towards Halswell and Rolleston takes longer and needs more water pressure, but is still cleared without hand-digging or a blade near the service.
